VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – United Soccer Leagues announced the top
W-League honors for the 2008 season Friday during the W-League
Championship banquet at the Virginia Beach Resort Hotel, honoring the
All-League selections as well as the U19 Player of the Year, Defender
of the Year, Goalkeeper of the Year, Coach of the Year and Most
Valuable Player as voted on by the league’s coaches and general
managers.
Most Valuable Player – Sarah Steinmann (Atlanta Silverbacks)
Taking
home the top honor of the night as 2008 W-League Most Valuable Player
was Atlanta Silverbacks striker Sarah Steinmann. Steinmann was the
Scoring Champion as well as the Goal Scoring Champion for her efforts
this year, leading the league in both points (40) and goals (19). To
put her remarkable season in perspective, the second leading scorer in
the league had 14 goals. In her five previous seasons in the W-League,
Steinmann scored a total of 25 goals.
The Silverbacks’ striker
began the year by scoring seven goals in the first three games, and
never looked back. As a mark of consistency, the Lilburn, Georgia
native scored in nine of the team’s 14 games this year, leading the
team to an undefeated regular season.
Steinmann was selected
to the W-League Team of the Week on three occasions this year, twice
last season, and was also named the Player of the Week once. The Auburn
University alum (2001-04) is in her third season with Atlanta after
playing for the Charlotte Lady Eagles in 2003 and 2004.
Coach of the Year – Tony Anglin (Atlanta Silverbacks)
First-year
Silverbacks head coach Tony Anglin earned the W-League Coach of the
Year honor by leading Atlanta to 13-0-1 record on the season, one of
three unbeaten campaigns in the league this season. Anglin joined the
Silverbacks organization in 2004 to coach and manage the Atlanta
Silverbacks Reserves. Anglin first joined the Atlanta Silverbacks
Women’s staff as interim head coach during the 2006 season and served
as the assistant coach last year. Anglin rose to the semi-professional
ranks in England, his home country, before beginning his coaching
career.
Defender of the Year – Sue Weber (Long Island Rough Riders)
As
the anchor of the Rough Riders back line, Sue Weber was honored as the
W-League Defender of the Year. The Long Island defense was tied for
fourth in the league with only seven goals allowed in 14 games this
season in what was arguably the most competitive division of the
league. She played in 13 games this season, leading the team in minutes
played and also contributing two assists on the year.
Goalkeeper of the Year – Mallori Lofton-Malachi (Tampa Bay Hellenic)
Tampa
Bay netminder Mallori Lofton-Malachi left quite an impression on the
opposition this season, earning the Goalkeeper of the Year honor
despite finishing six in the league in goals against average. She
helped guide the expansion side to a third-place finish in the Atlantic
with a personal record of 6-1-2 on the season and three shutouts. In
her lone game against the top two in the division, Lofton-Mallachi
posted a shutout against the vaunted Atlanta Silverbacks attack,
including a penalty kick save. She allowed just five goals in her nine
appearances.
U19 Player of the Year – Fortuna Velaj (Connecticut Passion)
Expansion
teams are supposed to rely on veteran players to get through their
first season, but the Passion found 18-year old standout Fortuna Velaj
stepping up to guide the squad to a fifth-place finish out of nine
teams in the division, missing the playoffs by only six points. En
route to earning the W-League U19 Player of the Year honor, Velaj
posted a team-leading eight goals on the year, scoring three goals in a
pair of 2-1 wins over playoff participant Boston in the final four
games of the season. Although Velaj and the Passion missed the W-League
postseason, she is now aiming for a USL Super-20 League championship
with CFC in Virginia Beach.

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA -- Patience is a virtue, and for FC Indiana, they
needed every bit of patience to squeak out a 1-0 victory in the
semifinals of the W-League over a very game Seattle Sounders club. In
the second semifinal, the Pali Blues and the posts denied the
Washington Freedom a repeat as W-League champion with Danesha Adams
scoring twice for the 2-0 win.
Seattle Sounders 0 :: 1 FC Indiana Lionesses - Match Stats [+]
The
game started with FC Indiana dominating possession. They controlled the
pace of the game with great spacing and crisp passing.
In the
12th minute FC Indiana had their first real chance when midfielder
Kelly Parker beat her defender just outside the 18-yard box and
whistled a shot just over the crossbar.
Then the weather
became the x-factor that it can be in crucial games. In the 18th minute
heavy rain started to fall and persisted for the rest of the half.
Un-phased
by the weather, FC Indiana continued to press the issue. Julianne Sitch
and Lena Mosebo were consistently dangerous on the wings and peppered
crosses in front of Seattle’s goal.
Fortunately
for Seattle, they had Jessica Salvi in goal who was up to the task.
Salvi showed no fear in constantly denying FC Indiana advances with
saves and clearing punches.
FC Indiana’s best chance came in
the 33rd minute when the dangerous Kelly Parker again created a scoring
chance by defeating her defender and sending in a cross that Lauren
Sesselmann headed off the crossbar.
Halftime came with the teams still tied at 0-0 and had an extended break due to a short lightning delay.
 Seattle
came out strong in the second half and started to gain some of the
possession. The majority of the first part of the second half was
played in FC Indiana’s end and knocked the Lionesses of guard.
FC
Indiana picked up the pace in the 70th minute when Julianne Sitch again
streaked down the sideline and sent in a dangerous ball that found the
foot of a Seattle defender.
Throughout the game, even though
they hadn’t scored, FC Indiana played with discipline and control.
Those qualities were rewarded with a spectacular goal by Fatima Leyva
in the 87th minute.
 Leyva
gained possession in the midfield and quickly maneuvered her way around
two Seattle defenders before playing a beautiful give and go with
W-League assist leader Laura Del Rio and finishing with a striker’s
grace in the lower left hand corner.
Seattle was unable to
create any chances in the waning moments of the game and fell by the
score of 1-0. Seattle became just the second team this season to limit
the Lionesses to one goal in a match with the previous match being FC
Indiana’s 1-1 draw against Minnesota. The Sounders also had two narrow
1-0 defeats to regular season champion Pali Blues.
Washington Freedom 0 :: 2 Pali Blues - Match Stats [+]
The
Pali Blues rode the leg of Danesha Adams as she scored two goals for
the Blues as their march to perfection continued Thursday night by
defeating the defending W-League Champion Washington Freedom 2-0 in the
second semifinal of the W-League Championship.
The Freedom
arguably gave Pali their toughest test of the year and for periods of
the night were the better team. They just simply could not find the
back of the net.
It started in the 6th minute when Freedom
forward Christie Welsh sent a beautiful through ball to Kele
Golebiowski, who was one on one with Blues goalie Valerie Henderson,
but her shot sailed wide right.
Just three minutes later, the
star of the match, Adams, had her first scoring chance of the game when
she fought off two defenders and sent a shot off the left post before
being cleared by a Washington defender.
Both teams continued
to trade chances and continued to play an attacking and entertaining
style of soccer. In the 22nd minute Washington had their best
opportunity of the night when star Pali defender Jill Oakes turned the
ball over in front of her goal. Welsh then pounced on the loose ball
and sent a low line drive that beat Henderson to the left, but her shot
clanked off the post.
Danesha Adams finally got the scoring
going in the 26th minute with a beautiful volley off a cross from
Collette McCallum. Pali controlled the ball from the backline and
fluently worked the play up the wing to McCallum, who sent a perfect
cross that Adams was able to bury in the back of the net.
Washington
thought they scored the equalizer in the 28th minute when Sarah Huffman
broke free and scored a goal. However, a late offside call that did not
please the Freedom bench was whistled and the goal was called back. The
half ended with Pali holding on to a 1-0 lead.
Washington started the second half strong and continued that play for the rest of the game.
“Washington
was the better team through most of the second half,” said Pali Head
Coach Charlie Naimo. “We changed formation for a little bit at the
start of the second half, but that clearly wasn’t working the way I
wanted it to, so we switched back.”
However that did not stop
Washington’s pursuit to tie the game. In the 55th minute Pali was
whistled for a hand ball right outside the area, which set up a golden
opportunity for the Freedom. Washington midfielder Lori Lindsey took
the free kick and sent a bending shot that curled around the wall and
beat Henderson. But as was the case throughout the night, the soccer
God’s did not smile on Washington and Lindsey’s shot hit the post.
Washington continued to dominate possession but could not get anything past the retreating Pali defense.
Adams
put the game away in the 82nd minute for the Blues when she tallied her
second goal of the game. The US youth international collected a loose
ball just beyond the midfield line and used her speed to blow by two
Freedom defenders. Adams then calmly chipped the ball over the charging
Freedom keeper Chante Sandiford to make it 2-0 in Pali’s favor.
Washington
still fought hard over the last few minutes of the game and for lady
luck again denied Welsh, who ripped a shot that again found the post
with the deflection going safely out of play. The Freedom hit the post
a total of three times in the match.
Pali’s win sets up a
marquee matchup in the W-League Championship on Saturday, August 8th at
8:00 p.m. against FC Indiana. Both Pali and FC Indiana have been
dominant on the season and their paths will finally meet this Saturday
with a W-League Championship at stake.

ATLANTA, GA -- The Atlanta Silverbacks' 2008 W-League season ended much like the 2007 campaign did, at the hands of the Washington Freedom. The Freedom dominated in possession throughout the Eastern Conference Championship game, but only squeaked by the Silverbacks 2-1 in overtime thanks to a 118th minute goal from Ali Andrzejewski.
With the win, the Freedom (13-1-2) move on to defend their W-League title as part of the final four with the Pali Blues and the winners of the Central and Western conference playoffs.
Last year in the W-League Championship game, Rebecca Moros scored in the first minute of play and Christie Welsh doubled the advantage in the 40th. Atlanta’s Sarah Steinmann found Krista Davey to cut the deficit in the 67th only to see Washington secure the win on a goal from Tiffany McCarty two minutes from time in Rochester, NY.
This time, the Freedom handed the Silverbacks (14-1-1) their first loss of the year at its most critical juncture.
Washington had the run of play throughout the first half, keeping up constant pressure on the Atlanta goal from the opening whistle, but Ashley Phillips made some aggressive plays on the ball to help keep it scoreless.
The Freedom outshot the Silverbacks 11-2 in the first half and 28-11 overall, but Atlanta made their first half chances count with Christine Latham cashing in on the team’s second shot of the half in the 23rd minute to give the Silverbacks the 1-0 edge at the break.
Washington kept up the pressure through the rest of the half, with the best chance coming when Lori Lindsey took a shot from long distance that Phillips just pushed up into the crossbar.
Welsh and Ella Masar both followed with chances on the same sequence, but the Atlanta keeper made the save on Welsh’s shot and then collected the loose ball before Masar could get off a shot to keep the Silverbacks’ 1-0 edge.
Phillips made six first half saves and nine overall, including a diving save on a shot from Welsh in the last few minutes of the first half.
Atlanta applied more pressure on the Washington net early in second half with Latham taking a point-blank shot off a corner kick, but Chante Sandiford made the save for the Freedom.
Phillips got into trouble in the 60th minute when she took down Welsh inside box, drawing a yellow card and giving Washington a spot kick. Rebecca Moros took the penalty kick but shot it right at Phillips, who then corralled the rebound to keep it the Freedom scoreless.
Washington amped the pressure back up as the second half wore on with it paying off in the 77th minute when Welsh one-touched a pass from Emily Janss past Phillips to tie the score at 1-1.
Atlanta went into a defensive shell late in the second half, allowing numerous chances for the Freedom, particularly through corner kicks, which the Freedom held a 19-4 edge in for the match. However, Washington wasn’t able to cash in on any of them with Silverbacks defender Ronda Brooks saving a shot off the line in stoppage time to send the game into overtime.
The overtime periods continued much like regulation with Washington having the bulk of the chances and Atlanta sneaking in a few chances, including a near miss by Latham on a header off of a feed from Tara Minnax near the end of the first overtime period.
The Freedom’s constant attack resulted in the game-winner in the 118th minute when Andrzejewski tucked a pass from Welsh into the back of the net past a diving Phillips for the final 2-1 margin.
The Freedom advanced to the W-League Championship tournament starting July 31 at the Virginia Beach SportsPlex. Hosted by the Hampton Roads Piranhas, the Semifinals will be July 31 with the the Championship match August 2, which will be aired on Fox Soccer Channel.
As the lowest seed not from the Western Conference, the Freedom (seeded fifth overall) will face the regular season champion Pali Blues in the Semifinals with the Western Conference playoff winner Seattle (seeded 13th) facing the winner of Sunday's Central Conference Championship between FC Indiana (seeded second) and Ottawa (seeded fourth). |

VANCOUVER, BC -- The Vancouver Whitecaps saw their season come to a disappointing end on Saturday, as they lost 1-0 to Seattle Sounders in the USL W-League Western Conference playoff at Swangard Stadium.
A spectacular bicycle kick from Sounders top scorer Chalise Baysa on minute 67 was the difference, as Seattle now advance to the W-League semifinals in Virginia Beach, Virginia, next week.
Whitecaps leading scorer Tiffeny Milbrett started the game on the substitutes’ bench, as she was suffering from back pains. Midfielder Chelsea Stewart was also a scratch, which meant that Paige Adams and veteran Rosalyn Hicks both came in to get the start in midfield.
The visitors started brightly, as Vancouver goalkeeper Erin McNulty had to make a couple of good early saves. On 10 minutes, she did well to hold a 25-yard shot from Annie Schefter. Three minutes later, Lisa Sari hit a 30-yard blast that was heading to the top right corner of the goal, but McNulty was able to get her gloves to it.
The Whitecaps came more into the play as the half progressed, and twice tested Seattle goalkeeper Jessica Salvi on minute 21. First, a header from Julie Armstrong was gathered comfortably, then a few ticks later, midfielder Paige Adams tried her luck with a powerful shot from 25 yards that was right at the Sounders shot-stopper.
There was a moment of controversy on minute 28, as Vancouver had a goal called back by referee Darci Kruse. Defender Chelsea Stang was apparently called for a foul on a defender, as she challenged for a high ball in the area from an Adams' free kick. Salvi came out and missed the ball, which Armstrong fired at goal and Lexi Marton tapped over the goal line, but by that point, the whistle had already been blown.
It was scoreless at halftime.
Both teams had chances just after the break. On minute 46 following a Seattle corner kick, the ball bounced around dangerously in front, before it was finally scrambled away. Back up the field the other way, Katrin Schmidt turned and hit a 25-yard effort just over the bar. Five minutes later from a free kick in a similar position, Kaylyn Kyle landed a dipping shot on to the roof of the net.
Schmidt's attacking play up the left was a problem for Seattle for most of the game, and on minute 59, the German fullback surged forward again and hit a bending shot that Salvi dove to save.
A minute later, Karla Schacher gained possession to the left of goal and centered it for Monica Lam-Feist in front, but her first touch let her down, allowing Salvi to pounce on the loose ball.
A minute after that, Schmidt made another great run into the box, and when her centering pass rebounded back to her, she snatched a shot just wide, with the Seattle keeper beaten.
After this flurry of Vancouver chances, it was Seattle who got on the scoresheet on 67 minutes. From a Sounders corner on the left, Kate Deines stabbed a bouncing ball high towards goal, which McNulty clawed off the line. Shannon Lovejoy headed it back in front to Baysa on the doorstep and she acrobatically scored off a bicycle kick from two yards out.
Vancouver pressed for the equalizer. On minute 78, Schmidt on the left sent across a good ball to Karla Schacher, who did well to get a head to it, but only to see it come back off the left post. It ran to Milbrett, who had just been subbed into the game, and her shot from 12 yards was superbly saved by Salvi on the Seattle goal line.
The Whitecaps last chance came in minute 82, as Lam-Feist sent a ball ahead to Schacher breaking on the left. When the keeper came out to challenge, the Vancouver striker did well to fire the ball past her from a sharp angle, but it rolled inches wide of the far post.
It is only the third time in the Whitecaps eight-year history they have failed to reach the league semifinals. Seattle has kept them out all three times, eliminating the Whitecaps in Vancouver in 2003 via penalties 3-1 after a 2-2 draw and finishing one point ahead of them for the second playoff berth in the conference standings last season.
The Sounders advanced to the W-League Championship tournament starting July 31 at the Virginia Beach SportsPlex. Hosted by the Hampton Roads Piranhas, the Semifinals will be July 31 with the the Championship match August 2, which will be aired on Fox Soccer Channel.
As the lowest seed not from the Western Conference, the defending champion Washington Freedom (seeded fifth overall) will face the regular season champion Pali Blues in the Semifinals with Seattle (seeded 13th) facing the winner of Sunday’s Central Conference Championship between FC Indiana (seeded second) and Ottawa (seeded fourth).
90 FULL MINUTES
The Whitecaps would like to thank their many fans for their fantastic support throughout a challenging season, in which Vancouver fielded a record 39 different players. Vancouver will be back in 2009 to again challenge for the W-League title. |

ATLANTA, GA -- The first game of the Eastern Conference Championship was full of excitement as fans witnessed 11 goals, the second most in league playoff history, in a match between the Washington Freedom and the Charlotte Lady Eagles that was extended to extra time. The night began with strong play from the Washington Freedom as they looked to defend their 2007 W-League title.
Washington put on the pressure from the beginning and got on the board in the second minute. Christy Welsh received the ball from Emily Janss with her back to the goal and standing just outside the box. She turned to the inside, blew through the defense, and placed the ball to the left of Charlotte goalkeeper Laura Armstrong.
Charlotte began to string together a bit of passing and was able to score the equalizer in the 11th minute. Nikki Lyons got the ball to Christy Rife who just got a foot on the ball and was able to deflect it into the side netting.
Washington quickly regained possession and continued their assault on the Charlotte defense. Washington’s Ella Masar fed the ball to Welsh in the center of the box and Welsh sent it to Armstrong’s left for her second goal on the night, putting Washington up 2-1 in the 16th minute.
Washington continued to dominate possession as several players got a look at the goal. In the 22nd minute, Washington scored their third goal of the match as Madison Keller lifted the ball past Armstrong off a feed from Sarah Huffman.
Charlotte got down the field in the 28th minute and was able to get on the board again to come within a goal of the Freedom. Charlotte’s Kelly Schmedes received the ball from Nikki Lyons, nimbly moved past her defender and finished with a fine shot to the far side netting past an outstretched Chante Sandiford.
Masar was forced to make an early exit in the 31st minute after sustaining an injury. Rebecca Moros came on for Masar and play continued with both teams getting some looks on goal. Charlotte had a good chance in the 44th minute, but the shot by Schmedes was saved by Sandiford and the follow up by Lyons was sent into the side netting.
Late in stoppage time, Charlotte’s Tina Murphy uncorked a long-range shot that Sandiford just tipped over the bar as the ball dipped toward the goal.
Washington had some good chances to start off the second half, but Charlotte got on the board first to draw the game even at 3-3. Murphy scored straight off a corner for the Eagles.
During the 66th minute, Charlotte took the lead for the first time in the match. Charlotte took a free kick that got cleared out to Schmedes, who placed the ball perfectly to Lyons at the center of the box. Lyons’ one-timer beat Sandiford and Charlotte took the lead 4-3.
Four minutes later Welsh drew a foul inside the area and Moros evened up the match when she placed her spot kick on the ground to the right of Armstrong.
As the match wore on, the Freedom carried the momentum. Washington’s Ali Andrzejewski had a great shot on goal, but Armstrong continued her solid play and was able to push it away off the far post. Armstrong was tested a few more times, but she stood up well to the Washington onslaught. As stoppage time wound down, Charlotte made one last attempt to get the ball down field, but they were stopped by Washington just past midfield and regulation ended in a 4-4 tie.
Washington began the scoring early in extra time as Emily Janss tallied her first goal on the night. Janss received the ball from Huffman on the right flank, pushed through the defense, and tucked the ball into the right side of the goal.
Washington got on the board again in the 103rd minute and cushioned their lead – and they’d need it. Lori Lindsay took a corner for the Freedom and Huffman tipped it to Christie Welsh, who finished it to complete her hat-trick.
Charlotte continued to fight and was able to draw within a goal in the 107th minute. Murphy took a free kick just outside the area and placed the ball over the wall and to the keeper’s left.
As extra time wound down, Charlotte pushed forward in attempt to find the equalizer. They had several good looks on goal, but they were never able to get it into the back of the net and the match ended in a 6-5 win for the Freedom.
The Freedom will next play tomorrow at 8 pm when they look to claim the Eastern Conference title and earn a trip to the final four in Virginia Beach, VA. They will face the winner of the match between the Atlanta Silverbacks and the Long Island Rough Riders in the second match of the semifinal doubleheader.
Historical Footnotes:
The 11 goals scored tied for second most in the W-League’s 14-year history, equaling the Eastern Conference Final showdown in 2004 that saw the New Jersey Wildcats advance 6-5 in regulation against the Montreal Xtreme, who played a 5-4 overtime thriller the night before against the defunct Long Island Lady Riders. French star Marinette Pichon scored the opening three goals for New Jersey in the game before Montreal mounted a rally to tie the game 3-3 and again at 4-4 before two more goals from Pichon in the final five minutes of regulation provided a two-goal margin that proved just enough as Montreal only netted once more before the final whistle. The league record is 13, set in the W-2 Western Conference Championship in 2001 in which the Kansas City Mystics and Oklahoma Outrage, both now defunct, played an back-and-forth thriller. Kansas City led by two after 19 minutes with Oklahoma drawing level in the 36th only to see the hosts reclaim a two goal lead before halftime. Oklahoma scored four straight goals to open the second half to erase the deficit and make a two-goal margin of their own as they went on to score six in the half.
Only three other teams have scored more than six goals in a W-League playoff game. In addition to aforementioned Oklahoma Outrage of 2001, the Maryland Pride tallied seven in a 7-0 drubbing of the Hampton Roads Piranhas in the 1997 Mid Atlantic Division Final and the Chicago Cobras hold the mark with nine in a 9-1 thrashing of Northern Kentucky in the 2003 Midwest Division Final. There have been six other occurrences of a six-goal performance in the playoffs, including one each by the two participants in tonight’s thriller. Washington posted theirs in a 6-1 win over Toronto last year in the conference semifinal and Charlotte recorded theirs in a 2005 conference semifinal win, 6-2, over Cleveland |
