Goal against New Zealand is a first of firsts for Canada and the world
Scoring the only goal in Canada's 1-0 win over New Zealand, Laval teen Rachel Lamarre made instant history as she was responsible for Canada posting the first-ever win in the history books of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup (a new competition).
The 17-year-old midfielder, who plays for the Laval Comètes of the USL's W-League, pushed her way up the centre, evaded two defenders, and drilled a shot past New Zealand goalkeeper Victoria Esson for the lone goal of the match, in the 53rd minute, giving Canada a lead they would never relinquish.

Lamarre scored a few minutes after she missed an opportunity to break the scoreless tie, just after the restart. In the 47th minute, with her back to the net an attempt with her back heel went just tantalizingly wide of the target.

New Zealand's best chance to equalize came in the 70th minute, when a thirty-yard free kick by Caitlin Campbell hit the crossbar and soared out of danger.

Canada had several chances to double its lead late in the game. With Rachel Lamarre once again leading the attack, carrying the ball into the New Zealand box where, however, the Canadians could just not find the back of the net. The closest they came on this last-minute flurry was an Annick Maltais shot which bounced off the crossbar.
No letting up
Desperate for a tying goal, New Zealand pressed the Canadian defense right into injury time, but Canadian 'keeper Geneviève Richard was up to the task, first punching out a dangerous corner kick and then outplaying Hannah Wall on the last New Zealand push, forcing the attacker to sail the ball over the crossbar.
Second goal in international play
This was Rachel Lamarre's second international goal for Canada, her first coming in the CONCACAF Women's Under-17 Championship this past July in Trinidad and Tobago, where she scored in Canada's 3-0 win against Puerto Rico.
In the win against New Zealand, Canadian 'keeper Geneviève Richard posted her first international clean sheet, stopping four shots in the historic Canadian victory. Canada continued its quest for U-17 supremacy in women's international soccer this past Saturday, November 1, in a game against South American champions Columbia.

This was the first-ever women's U-17 match between Canada and New Zealand. At the U-20 level, the two countries recently played to a 1-1 draw at the Four Nations Cup in Chile. In senior competition, Canada has dominated New Zealand, scoring 4 wins and 2 draws, losing only once

Pacific Palisades, Calif. – In their first action since winning the 2008 USL W-League championship, the Pali Blues Soccer Club will host the Chinese Women’s U-20 National Team on Wednesday, November 12, at the Stadium by the Sea. With kickoff slated for 7:30 PM, emotions will run high as many players will play their final game as members of the Pali Blues before heading to the professional ranks of Women’s Pro Soccer (WPS).

"We are excited to bring a Chinese National Team to the Palisades,” Blues head coach Charlie Naimo commented. “What makes this game even more special is that we will be giving our fans one last chance to see some of their favorite Blues players in action before they say their goodbyes and head off to the professional teams that have drafted them."

Not only will this match be an opportunity for Blues fans to send off their favorite players, but there will also be outstanding action on the pitch from both sides.

“The game itself will consist of great action as it will be loaded with WPS draftees playing against a great national team during their final preparations for the U-20 World Cup, which will be held in Chile at the end of November,” Naimo confirmed. “We are expecting loads of Blues fans along with a strong showing from the Chinese supporters to join us for a great evening."

The Blues, ranked #2 in the world by Women’s World Football, already have a total of nine players headed to play in the inaugural season of WPS, which will begin in April of 2009 with seven clubs throughout the United States. The Blues saw seven players selected in the WPS General Draft with midfielder Jill Oakes taken second overall by the Bay Area. The second-year franchise also saw Matilda Sarah Walsh selected by Sky Blue FC in the WPS International Draft, and Aussie Collette McCallum was taken by Sky Blue FC as a discovery player.

The Chinese U-20 National Team is led by head coach Zhang Guilai. After playing the Blues, they will head to Chile for the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. Scheduled to begin play on November 19, the Cup will be played among the 16 qualifying nations with the final occurring on December 7 at La Florida Stadium. In their past two appearances, the Chinese U-20’s have claimed the silver medal in both tournaments. In 2006 they fell to Korea DPR in Moscow, playing in what was the first U-20 Women’s World Cup. They also reached the championship game against Germany in the 2004 U-19 World Cup in Thailand.

The USL W-League played its inaugural season in 1995, and it is recognized as the premiere development league for female players in North America. The schedule is set to open next May and commence in August.

U.S. Soccer Press Release – www.ussoccer.com

RICHMOND, VA – The Richmond Kickers are pleased to host the gold medal-winning U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team as they continue its Achieve Your Gold Tour at the University of Richmond Stadium vs. South Korea on November 1, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. ET.

The game will be a homecoming for Virginia native and University of Virginia alumna Angela Hucles, who led the team in scoring during the Olympics with four goals.

The tour, which is taking the Olympic champions across the USA to celebrate its historic run to the top of the podium in Beijing, also announced stops in Cincinnati on Nov. 5 and Tampa, Fla., on Nov. 8.

Tickets go on sale to the public Friday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m. ET at ussoccer.com, by phone at 804-262-8100 (Richmond), and at all Ticketmaster ticket centers the Richmond area. Groups of 20 or more can obtain an order form at ussoccer.com or call 312-528-1290.

As a sponsor of U.S. Soccer, Visa® is pleased to offer all Visa cardholders access to an advance ticket sale for these matches before the sale to the general public. This advance sale will take place from Thursday, Oct. 9, at 8 a.m. ET until Friday, Oct. 10, at 8 a.m. at ussoccer.com. Visa will be the only payment method accepted through the Visa presale and is the preferred card of U.S. Soccer. Terms and conditions apply.

The match on Nov. 1 will be the USA’s third visit to Richmond, having defeated Brazil in 1998 and Iceland in 2006, a game in which the USA needed a 92nd minute game-winner from Abby Wambach to win 2-1 and avoid the draw.

Midfielder Carli Lloyd, who scored the game-winning goal in the championship game on Aug. 21 at Beijing Workers’ Stadium during the dramatic 1-0 overtime victory against Brazil, headlines the roster. Team co-captains Christie Rampone and Kate Markgraf, who solidified the defense that shut out Brazil for the title and goalkeeper Hope Solo, whose stellar play all tournament long, but especially in the gold medal game, will anchor the USA’s defense.

Fifteen of the 18 players from the Olympic roster will travel on the tour, and an additional four players have been added. The USA’s college players – Amy Rodriguez (USC), Tobin Heath (UNC) and Lauren Cheney (UCLA) -- will not be playing due to commitments to their college seasons. Olympic alternates Briana Scurry and midfielder Kacey White were added to the roster for the entire Achieve Your Gold Tour, and they will now be joined by two members of the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup Team in defenders Tina Ellertson and Marian Dalmy, who have come back from pregnancy and injury, respectively.

Hucles, who has 97 caps, will become the 24th player in U.S. history to earn 100 caps if she plays in all three matches.
The USA heads into these three matches against South Korea with a 29-1-1 record in 2008, having already set the mark for most wins in calendar year in U.S. history. The USA has not lost a domestic match since November of 2006. In fact, the U.S. women have lost just five domestic matches this decade, three coming in 2000.

Despite two trips to South Korea in the past three years for the Peace Queen Cup, the U.S. women have not faced the South Koreans since 1999, a 5-0 win in Columbus, Ohio. The USA has played them just three times, winning all three matches handily.

CARY, NC – It was a busy weekend for the Triangle’s Division One college soccer teams as all of them are vying for a spot in the 2008 NCAA tournament as well as the ACC Tournament. Both the Men’s and Women’s ACC Championships will be held at the Carolina RailHawks’ WakeMed Soccer Park the first two weeks of November and the 2008 Women’s College Cup Final Four will also be held in Cary on Friday, December 5 and Sunday, December 7.

The University of North Carolina Tar Heels men’s and women’s teams posted two wins that cement their positions in the ACC and National rankings. The Tar Heel men (11-2-1 overall) defeated Virginia Tech (5-8-1) 3-2 with first half goals by Cary RailHawks U-23’s own Brian Shriver and Garry Lewis. An own goal by the Hokies in the 56th would eventually break the tie and place them in third place in the ACC rankings. The Tar Heels will most likely gain a spot in the National Soccer Coaches Association Poll this week.

The Tar Heel women (14-1-1), who are ranked second in the country, defeated NC State’s Wolfpack (8-8-0) 5-0 at Method Road Stadium in Raleigh with four of those tallies coming from US U-20 and Carolina RailHawks Women standout Casey Nogueira. Nogueira is now tied for second in the country for goals scored and the Tar Heels are ranked first in the ACC with seven wins and no losses.

The Duke Blue Devil men (6-5-2) were faced with a tall order on Saturday, October 18 as they traveled to Winston-Salem (13-0-1) to battle current College Cup Champion and number one team in the country Wake Forest University. The Blue Devils came out of Spry Stadium unscathed with a 0-0 draw snapping Wake Forest’s 18-game winning streak and holding the Deacons scoreless for the first time in 25 matches.

Duke’s women’s team (11-3-1) lost to Florida State (12-2-1) 5-2 in a battle of top 10 teams in Tallahassee, FL. Duke junior Kayanne Gummersall tallied both goals for the Blue Devils bringing her total to nine goals this season.

The NC State Wolfpack men came away with a 2-0 win at Clemson on Friday night with goals by junior Federico Nachmann and redshirt freshman Kris Byrd. This win puts them in eighth place in the ACC standings one step closer to a berth in the ACC tournament.

Fresh off leading the Pali Blues to the USL's W-League soccer championship, Charlie Naimo has been named General Manager of the Los Angeles franchise in the new Women's Professional Soccer league. The team begins play in the league's inaugural season in April.

"It's an honor to join the Los Angeles franchise as the team's General Manager," Naimo said. "I believe that combining my coaching experience, work ethic and desire to impact women's soccer with all the great players and resources we've assembled here in Los Angeles will give us the ability to create a winning franchise from day one."

Naimo led the Blues to a perfect season in their first campaign in the W-League. He will continue to coach the Blues even as he oversees soccer operations for the new pro team.

"The teams will absolutely be connected," Naimo said, referring to the link between the professional club and W-League side.

"Our goal for the Pali Blues is to repeat as W-League champions, and we will continue to develop a strong presence in our local soccer community."

Naimo was first a head coach in 1998 with the New Jersey Splash, earning W-League Coach of the Year accolades in 1999.

After a stint with the New Brunswick (NJ) Power, he took over a struggling New Jersey Wildcats club and orchestrated the reconstruction of the organization. In his three seasons with the club, Naimo compiled a 41-1 regular season record and led the Wildcats to first-place finishes in 2004 and 2006 and the W-League championship in 2005.

"We're extremely happy to have Charlie on board in the capacity of a General Manager," said Rudi Bianchi, managing partner for the new team. "Charlie has proven to have a great ability to identify talent and a history of bringing players from all over the world to teams that he's been a part of. We know he'll help to deliver a great on-field product to our fans and will assist us in our dream of establishing an internationally-renowned women's soccer club."
