WLS: Can you describe the moment when you were asked to work as Chair for the Next Women's World cup?

I felt very honoured by the DFB's decision to entrust this pivotal position as president of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Organising Committee to me. The great support I received from the very first minute from the president of the German FA, Dr. Theo Zwanziger, made me feel confident. Besides, we have excellent people working at the OC, which makes things easier.

Women's Olympic Football Tournament

Canada's women's national team is off the Olympics. The team departed Monday 21 July from Vancouver International Airport for Singapore where it will train these next seven days before heading to China. Canada plays its first game on 6 August at Tianjin Olympic Sports Center Stadium in Tianjin against Argentina.

This will be Canada's first trip to the Women's Olympic Football Tournament. Canada travels to Beijing on 30 July. After its opening match on 6 August, Canada will face hosts China on 9 August (also in Tianjin) and Sweden on 12 August (at the Workers' Stadium in Beijing).

Canada has high hopes for the Women's Olympic Football Tournament. There are a dozen countries participating, most of which consider themselves medal contenders. Favourites include number-one ranked United States, number-two ranked Germany and number-three ranked Brazil.

Ever improving, Canada sees itself as one of those medal hopefuls. To get through to the quarter-finals, Canada will need to finish first or second in its group or be one of the top-two third-place finishers (out of three groups). The top eight teams play in the 15 August quarter-final with four teams advancing to the 18 August semi-final. The final (and match for third place) take place on 21 August.

Coach Pellerud nominates roster for Olympic Football Tournament PDF Print E-mail

Canada’s women’s national team has nominated its roster for the 2008 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament. Coach Even Pellerud made his selections today in North Vancouver, BC, less than a week before the soccer players and staff depart for Asia. The Canadian soccer team will compete in the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament from 6-21 August in Beijing, China.

Canada’s soccer team qualified for the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament for the first time in Association history earlier this season. Canada qualified by finishing second at the CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament in Juarez, Mexico. The clinching victory was a 1:0 win over hosts Mexico in the tournament semi-final. Melissa Tancredi scored the decisive goal while goalkeeper Erin McLeod kept the clean sheet.

Canada will play Argentina, China and Sweden in the opening round of the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament. Canada plays Argentina on 6 August, China on 9 August and Sweden on 12 August. From the 12 teams in the women’s tournament (three groups of four teams), eight teams advance to the 15 August quarter-finals. Four teams then advance to matches on 18 and 21 August: first the semi-finals and then, depending on the outcomes, either the gold-medal final or bronze-medal final.

Every player nominated to the roster for the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament has also represented Canada at the national or national-youth level. On the world stage, Canada was most recently ranked ninth in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings. The Canadian team finished second to the world’s number-one ranked United States at the 2008 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament. At the youth level, Canada recently won its second CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship, this time defeating the United States 1:0 in the 2008 final.

Canada Returns West after successful week in Toronto PDF Print E-mail

Canada’s women’s national team reconnected with its fans this week, playing to a 1:1 draw in front of 13,554 fans at BMO Field in Toronto, ON. Captain Christine Sinclair was the star, scoring her 92nd goal with the full national team, still an Association record.

'It was awesome,' says Sinclair. 'It’s nice to finally play a home game and see the little kids in the stands cheering for you. They all know all of our names. It’s a perfect atmosphere for soccer.'

Sinclair and her teammates had several chances to meet fans this week. On Tuesday, the team visited the Winners store at College Park in downtown Toronto. All 19 players signed autographs for a steady 90 minutes while also handling questions from the media that was on hand.

On Tuesday afternoon, the team trained in front of select fans and clubs at BMO Field. After the session, the fans came down to the side of the field to get autographs.

At last on Thursday well after the match, the players were still signing autographs for their fans. Sinclair in particular came back out to the field level to sign for fans after completing her post-game press conference.

As for the match, coach Even Pellerud says, 'the game finished 1:1 and I’m not going to complain too much about that. It was an even game.'

Sinclair scored first in the 53rd minute to give Canada the lead. Canada had several more chances, but so too did Brazil. Brazil finally scored in the 81st minute to even the score.

Canada’s women’s national team, whose title sponsor is Winners and whose presenting sponsor is Teck Cominco, now returns back to Vancouver to complete their pre-Olympic residency camp. The team will have one last week of training in Vancouver before heading to Asia on Monday 21 July. Canada then opens the 2008 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament against Argentina on 6 August.
