WLS: Can you describe the moment when you were asked to work as Chair for the Next Women's World cup?

I felt very honoured by the DFB's decision to entrust this pivotal position as president of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Organising Committee to me. The great support I received from the very first minute from the president of the German FA, Dr. Theo Zwanziger, made me feel confident. Besides, we have excellent people working at the OC, which makes things easier.

Canada’s Michelle Pye is one of five FIFA referees selected to remain in New Zealand for the closing stages of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. Those stages feature the two semi-final matches in Christchurch on 13 November and both the final and match for third place in Auckland on 16 November.

Pye has been appointed to officiate the 13 November semi-final between England and Korea DPR. The match kicks off at 16.00 local time. The other semi-final match features USA and Germany.

'To be one of only five referees chosen to continue in this tournament is such an honour,' said Pye from New Zealand.

Pye, from Kamloops, BC, is a physical education and science teacher at Handsworth Secondary School in North Vancouver, BC. She has been a FIFA referee since 2007.

'We are delighted that Michelle has been chosen to remain for the final stages,' said Joe Guest, Canadian Soccer Association’s Director of Refereeing. 'She had prepared for the tournament and has performed well in the games in which she has been involved.'

The FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final takes place this Sunday 16 November at 16.00 local time in Auckland. The final will be broadcast on CBC Bold and CBCSports.ca on Saturday 15 November at 22.00 ET / 19.00 PT.

Canada put up a brave effort today, but ultimately could not climb the wall that the Germans put up at New Zealand 2008. Canada lost 1:3 to Germany in the quarter-final stage in Wellington, New Zealand, thus making an exit from the inaugural FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.

Dzsenifer Marozsan scored twice for Germany while Lynn Mester scored once. Nkem Ezurike scored Canada's lone goal, her second in four matches.

Germany advances to the semi-final stage to be played 13 November against either USA or Korea Republic. The match will be played at QEII Park in Christchurch. Germany's opponent, however, must first be decided on 9 November at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton.

In the other quarter-final match on 8 November, Korea DPR won 4:0 over Denmark. Myong Hwa Jon scored two goals before Un Ae Ri and Un Ju Kim added singles. Korea DPR will face either England or Japan in a 13 November semi-final. The England-Japan quarter-final match precedes the USA-Korea Republic match on 9 November at Waikato Stadium.

The FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup New Zealand 2008 featured 16 teams, originally divided into four groups. Canada was one of eight teams that advanced to the quarter-final stage. Following the quarter-final stage is the semi-final stage (13 November) and final (16 November). The final kicks off at 16.00 (local time) in Auckland, which back in Canada translates to 23.00 ET / 20.00 PT on 15 November.

With a 1:1 draw against Colombia in its second match, Canada remains in first place in Group A at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup New Zealand 2008. Canada’s Nkem Ezurike scored in the ninth minute before Colombia’s Ingrid Vidal equalised just a minute later.

'We have to see the result as a point gained rather than two dropped,' said Canada’s assistant coach Lewis Page. 'It leaves us in a decent position and although you’re never too confident, we’d probably have taken four points from our first two games if you’d offered us that before the tournament.'

Canada is in first place with four points after two matches (one win, one draw, no losses). Denmark is second (1-1-0, four points) followed by Colombia (0-2-0, two points) and New Zealand (0-0-2, no points). Denmark won 2:1 over New Zealand on 1 November.

Should Canada advance to the quarter-final stage, it will meet one of the top-two teams from Group B. The quarter-final match is scheduled for 8 November in Wellington. In Christchurch today, European champion Germany (2-0-0) remains in first place after a 3:2 win over Ghana (0-1-1). DPR Korea (1-1-0) is in second place after a 2:1 win over Costa Rica (0-0-2).

With its opening match out of the way, Canada has begun preparations for its next opponent Colombia at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup New Zealand 2008. The two sides will meet in the afternoon of Saturday 1 November, which back home in Canada translates to 17.00 PT or 20.00 ET on Friday 31 October. The match will be streamed live on CBCSports.ca.

Canada is currently in first place in Group A with three points. Canada won its first match 1:0 over host New Zealand on 28 October, doing so after opening ceremonies and in front of 13,123 fans at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland. It was Rachel Lamarre that scored the first-ever goal in FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup history.

'The players felt the pressure of the (first) match,' said coach Bryan Rosenfeld. 'I am very proud of them coming out with three important points.'

Trailing Canada with one point apiece is Colombia and Denmark, the two sides that concluded with a 1:1 draw on 29 October. Colombia’s Tatiana Ariza scored in the 20th minute and Denmark’s Simone Boye equalized in the 51st minute.

The group phase for Group A runs 28 October to 4 November. Matches on 1 November are Canada vs. Colombia and New Zealand vs. Denmark. After 4 November, only the top-two teams in the group will advance to the quarter-final stage.

In the quarter-final stage, Group A’s first-place team will play Group B’s second-place team while Group A’s second-place team will play Group B’s first-place team. These two matches will take place 8 November in Wellington. Group B features Germany (three points after today), Korea DPR (one point), Ghana (one point), and Costa Rica (no points).

Winners from the quarter-final stage advance to the 13 November semi-final in Christchurch and winners from the semi-final stage advance to the 16 November final in Auckland.
