WLS: Can you describe the moment when you were asked to work as Chair for the Next Women's World cup? I felt very honoured by the DFB's decision to entrust this pivotal position as president of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Organising Committee to me. The great support I received from the very first minute from the president of the German FA, Dr. Theo Zwanziger, made me feel confident. Besides, we have excellent people working at the OC, which makes things easier. WLS: How are the plans coming? (More)

Canada’s
women’s national coach Carolina Morace spoke to media in Toronto today
about the upcoming international match against Japan. Tickets to the
match are on sale now via Ticketmaster at ticketmaster.ca or
416.872.5000. The match, presented by Winners, kicks off at 19.00 at
BMO Field on Monday 25 May.
'It’s a great opportunity for us, for our team, to show our game,' said
Morace. 'I think also it’s important we play more matches in Canada
because I want the people to love our team.'
Tickets to the 25 May match cost between $15-$35 each. Group rates are
available in numerous sections with the purchase of 10 or more tickets.
Canada holds a current six-game unbeaten streak at home, including a
1:1 draw against Olympic silver medalist Brazil last 10 July 2008.
Tuesday’s press conference was Morace’s second visit to Toronto as
Canada’s women’s head coach. She was originally presented on 5 February
before heading off to camps in Los Angeles and Rome. Morace and her new
team then reached the final at the 2009 Cyprus Women’s Cup, only losing
to England in the competition final.
Morace now has two months to prepare before her first home test on 25
May at BMO Field. Most players have returned to their clubs, including
several that play in the new Women’s Professional Soccer league that
kicks off this weekend.

sale this morning through Ticketmaster (416.872.9000 / ticketmaster.ca).
The international women’s match, presented by Winners, will take place
25 May 2009 at BMO Field. The match will mark the home debut of
Canadian head coach and FIFA women’s football ambassador Carolina
Morace.
'It will be a special night this first match in Toronto,' says coach
Morace. 'We look forward to continuing to develop our team play against
a quality opponent such as Japan. It will be a great test for our young
team.'
The Canada-Japan match will kick off at 19.00 (7pm ET) this 25 May.
Tickets cost between $15-$35 each. Group rates are available in
numerous sections with the purchase of 10 or more tickets.
Coach Morace, an international star since her playing days in Italy,
took over the Canadian team this February with initial camps in Los
Angeles and Rome. She then made her Canadian debut with four matches in
the 2009 Cyprus Women’s Cup. Canada finished second in the tournament
behind England after posting two wins, one draw and one loss.
As for Japan, it will be the senior team’s first-ever visit to Canada.
Japan was recently ranked 9th on the FIFA/Coca-Cola Women’s World
Ranking, two places ahead of Canada. In 2008, Japan finished fourth at
the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament.
Canada, whose title sponsor is Winners and presenting sponsor is Teck,

Canada falls to England in final |

A bruised and battered Canadian squad ran out of gas, losing 1:3 to England
in the Cyprus Women’s Cup final. Canada, playing their first series of
matches under new coach Carolina Morace, had shown improvement in their
play with each game at the Cyrpus Cup before succumbing to a well
organized and disciplined England squad. Christine Sinclair gave Canada
a 14th minute lead, scoring the 99th goal of her career, before England
scored three goals in a 15 minute period before the end of the first
half, a deficit from which Canada was unable to recover.
“Today we lost but we have to be proud of the performance,” said coach
Carolina Morace. “For us it is a start, this team has great potential.
Of course, we are not happy that we have lost. I think the players
understand that we can do more.”
Sinclair scored her goal after receiving a pass from strike partner
Melissa Tancredi and lobbing the onrushing England Goalkeeper. England
hit back with goals from Lianne Sanderson (32nd), Kelly Smith (40th),
and Carla Faye (45th).
Canada will leave the tournament feeling positive about the steps
they’ve taken as a group. The Canadian performances improved
consistently and players and staff alike became more comfortable with a
new playing style as well as with each other.
“After being together for only one month our results at this tournament
have been excellent,” said Morace. “The players have improved match by
match. They understand what we expect from them and that is important.”
Canada, whose title sponsor is Winners and whose presenting sponsor is
Teck, now looks forward to their next scheduled match, a 25 May home
date with Japan at BMO field in Toronto.
In other scores from finals day at the Cyprus Cup, France won 6-5 on
penalties after a 1:1 draw with New Zealand, Netherlands beat South
Africa 5:0, and Scotland defeated Russia 2:1.
Final standings at the 2009 Cyprus Women’s Cup:
1. England
2. Canada
3. France
4. New Zealand
5. Holland
6. South Africa
7. Scotland
8. Russia
